IMPACT REPORT

NC STATE College of Education Impact Report

  • Project Goal: Communicate the importance of philanthropy in advancing college priorities and addressing North Carolina’s urgent educational challenges. The yearly Impact Report focuses on the impact donor giving has on college students who are preparing to become extraordinary educators. This 2022 report tells the story of Carla, a sophomore elementary education major and how donor giving has impacted her journey and made it possible for her to attend NC State and also to study abroad. The Impact Report is mailed out to all donors at the end of each year.

  • Primary Audience: Alumni and donors, including individuals and foundations

  • My Role in the Project: The layout and design of the 8.75"x5.75" 8-panel double gate fold brochure, mailing envelope and remittance envelope.

  • Other Project Collaborators: Marketing team writer, who developed the copy. University photographer took photos of the featured student in various campus settings and marketing team members provided support during the photoshoot.

  • Design Challenge:  The content writer had a great idea of including a winding road, to visually represent Carla's journey at the university. The challenge was designing a winding road and laying out the page so the winding road was visible, and still featured the student prominently and also included the copy in a way it was clear and easy to read. Another design challenge was determining a background color for those panels of the brochure, that would show the road graphic clearly, as well as the student and the text, and would also work well with the university's branding colors, without any of those key elements getting lost on the page. There was a plan B, if the winding road concept didn't visually come together, fortunately, plan A worked out nicely.

  • Project Outcomes: Communication pieces like these are part of a comprehensive plan formulated by the collaborative work of the college's Development Team and the Marketing and Communications Team and have contributed to a 194% increase in annual student support from 2017-2022. Pieces like these support the college's goals to broaden the annual donor base and support development in major gifts.
    BONUS: A major high level donor called the Development Team to say how impressed he was with the piece.
